Didn't get the results you needed? Here's what to do...

This morning, thousands of students across the country are opening their A-Level results – But it’s not always a moment of relief.

The day you’ve been anticipating for months has finally arrived, and the A-Level results you’ve received aren’t quite what you were hoping for. It’s natural to feel a mix of emotions, but don’t panic! There are still plenty of options available to you. Here’s your handy guide to getting back on your path to success this summer.

Step 1: Take a deep breath and assess the situation.

While not getting the A-Level Results you wanted isn’t the end of the world, it can certainly feel like it. It’s normal to be feeling anxious, disappointed or lost during this time. After two years of full-time study, it’s very natural for Results Day to be full of high emotions – whether positive or negative.

Take a moment to breathe, calm down, and assess the situation. Take the morning off to unwind and do something calming – If you’re not sure what to do, apps such as Calm have great meditation exercises.

After that, go over your results in more detail. Review your grades, tally up your UCAS points, and compare them with the conditions of your University offers. Identify which offers you didn’t meet, and by how many points.

Step 2: Contact your Firm and Insurance choices

Contact Universities that have given you conditional offers. Even if you didn’t meet the exact requirements, there might still be a chance they’ll accept you.

Universities can sometimes be flexible, especially if you narrowly missed the mark. When you call, be polite and prepared. Have your UCAS ID, course details, and results ready. Explain your situation clearly and express your enthusiasm for the course.

They may ask you to send your grades or other documents via email, so be ready to act quickly. Keep a record of who you spoke to and what they said for follow-up conversations.

Step 3: Check out Clearing

If you’re unable to secure a course with any of your conditional offers, don’t worry! Clearing is still an excellent option.

Clearing is when Universities offer places to students who haven’t met their grade requirements, or do not have any offers. This can be great if you’re left feeling a little lost on Results Day, and you need to consider alternatives to your original university choices.

Clearing is a great opportunity for students looking to continue their studies, in spite of not getting their desired A-Level Results. If you want to learn more about clearing, including whether you’re eligible and how to apply, check out our handy Clearing guide here!

Step 4: Consider Taking a Gap Year and Reapplying

Many students are anxious about a gap year negatively impacting their chances of getting into university – Often, it’s the exact opposite.

Gap years exist as an opportunity for you to build relevant skills and experience in your area of study. Whether through courses, work experience, travel or self-study, a year of self-improvement can be highly beneficial. It can even increase your chances of getting into your firm choice next year!

If you’re thinking of taking a gap year, make your time count. Volunteering, travelling, or taking time to travel independently can demonstrate maturity, focus, and self-drive. All of which will be valuable assets when you’re applying for University again next year.

Step 5: Consider an Apprenticeship

In 2024, University is just one of many options for students finishing their A-Levels. Perhaps Uni doesn’t feel like right anymore, or you’re considering alternatives. So – Why not consider an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships combine work and study, allowing you to gain experience while earning a qualification. They’re available in a range of fields, from engineering, to business, to healthcare. Check out the National Apprenticeship Service for opportunities.

Look for apprenticeships that align with your interests and career goals. Contact the apprenticeship providers to learn more. Did you know: Urban Evolution offers young professional accommodation too! Check it out here!
